A1 JACOB SISLEY - Jacob and Lewis were taxed as single men in 1786. They could be Jacob and his son or his brother. Jacob's wife was named Jane. He was a cooper (barrel maker) by trade. Jacob moved across the river into Washington Township where in 1783, he sold to Peter Keller a ferryboat canoe and seventy-five acres of land. He lived in Washington Twp until 1800 when he was listed on the tax list as - gone. Where? Perhaps to Ohio.

Generation No. 2

2. LEWIS2 SISLEY (JACOB1) was born July 22, 1765 in Pennsylvania2, and died February 14, 1826 in Washington Twp., Fayette Co., PA2. He married MARGARET ELLIS November 14, 1788 in Probably Pennsylvania2, daughter of NATHAN ELLIS and MARY.

Notes for LEWIS SISLEY:

[MyNote: Record of the Sisley/Sissley/Cisly/Cissley/Cicely Family can be found in the Pennsylvania Archives as early as 1773. This branch of the family was found in Washington township, Fayette county before 1790.]

DEATH: On the 24th of June 1827 the court appointed guardians for the two youngest children, Wilson and Amberson. In June 1834 an agreement was made that John Sisley, eldest son, would purchase the land (175+ acres) for $20.00 per acre and would pay the other heirs their equal share within twelve months.

The following heirs of Lewis Sisley are listed in the estate settlement records: Margaret Sisley, widow of the said Lewis Sisley; Samuel Shepler and Many Ann; Morgan Morgan and Nancy; Eleanor Lyons; John E. Sisley and Sarah; Samuel Nutt and Rhuahanna; Conrad Stein and Indianee; Wilson Sisley, Amberson E. Sisley. William D. Mullen was appointed guardian for Wilson, minor over age 14, and Amberson, minor under age 14.

B1 LEWIS SISLEY – A family record owned by Robert Sisley shows Lewis Sisley, son of Jacob and Jane Sisley and Margaret, daughter of Nathan and Mary Ellis married on Nov. 14, 1788. Lewis born in Pennsylvania, July 22, 1765, died Feb. 14, 1826. Margaret born in Maryland Dec. 13, 1773 died Feb. 13, 1870. (This looks like 1810 but records show she was still living in 1860 at 87 years of age.) They are both buried at Rehobeth Cemetery.

[MyNote: My data on the descendants of Lewis Sisly (1765- 1826) is documented through personal research using Census Records, Land Records, Biographical Histories, Obituaries, Local Birth/Death/Marriage Records, etc. Some of the birth/death/marriage dates on Lewis' children are from 'The Sisley Family' by Paul and Edith Bongiorno and are noted as such in the sources. Most other data is not documented in sources at this time. If you are a descendant of any of these people, please contact me. Rebeckah R. Wiseman <rwiseman@ligtel.com> 8/28/99]

Notes for MARY ANN SISLEY:

Mary Ann and Samuel Shepler may have lived in Rostrave Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. There are census records for Samuel Shepler for 1830, 1840 and 1850. But the ages listed in 1850 would be off by 10-15 years if it is the same Samuel and Mary.

3. HESTER3 SISLEY (LEWIS2, JACOB1) was born 1795 in Fayette Co., PA6, and died 1899 in Fayette Co., PA6. She married JAMES MCCRORY 1812 in <Fayette Co., PA>7.

Notes for HESTER SISLEY:

Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County, Pennsylvania Gresham, 1889

p.362 James McCrory, was a native of Fayette county, and a son of James McCrory, who came from England and settled near Allenport, Washington county, over one hundred years ago. His mother, Hester Sisley, was a daughter of Lewis Sisley, who settled in the county over one hundred years ago.

HISTORY: Nelson's Biographical Dictionary & Historical Reference Book of Fayette County, Pennsylvania Nelson, 1900

p1045 Lewis McCrory, a farmer and retired engineer of Franklin township, was born January 9, 1824, and is a son of James and Esther (Sisley) McCrory. Mr. McCrory is of Scotch-Irish ancestry... The McCrory family has been one hundred and fifty years in Western Pennsylvania. Lewis McCrory’s grandfather settled near Belle Vernon, and was driven away three times by Indians. He took up a large tract of land but left his improvement several times on an Indian alarm, and went to a fort for security. His son, James McCrory, was born in 1789, was a blacksmith by trade, and served in a drafted company in the war of 1812. James McCrory at the close of the War of 1812, married Esther Sisley, and to their union were born eight children: Wilson, born in 1815; John, born in 1816; Thomas, born in 1818; William, born in 1821; Lewis, born in 1824; Margaret, born in 1826; James, born in 1828; and one who died in infancy. Of these children only William, Margaret and Lewis, the subject of this sketch, are living.

Per biography of of Lewis McCrory (Nelson, 1900 p1045) William was born in 1821 and was not living in 1900.

CENSUS: 1860 Fayette City, Fayette Co., PA p226

Nancy, 37, born Pennsylvania [b. 1823]

David, 1, born Pennsylvania [b. 1859]

[MyNote: These two probably not be the same individual. According to the bio below, that William McCrory was married twice, both times his wife's name was Mary. There could very well be two William McCrory's in Fayette County at that time. I doubt that the one below in biography is a son of James and Hester, primarily because they are not mentioned. On the same page there is a biography of Wilson McCrory in which James and Hester are named as Wilson's parents.]

Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County, Pennsylvania Gresham, 1889

p.362 William McCrory is a native of Fayette City, and was born March 11, 1822. He attended school and worked in his father’s blacksmith shop until he was nineteen years of age, when he became a steamboat engineer. He ran for many years on the Monongahela and Ohio rivers, and was in the "Lower Trade" on the Mississippi for some years.

He was married in 1850 to Miss Mary Banks, daughter of William Banks, who was a prominent glass-blower. She died in 1853. In 1858 he married again, his second wife being Miss Mary Wilson, daughter of David Wilson, who came from Ireland to Fayette county prior to 1794. During the whiskey insurrection he and three of his neighbors assisted in preventing the burning of Pittsburgh.

Mr. McCrory made a trip to California in 1850, going by water via the Isthmus of Panama. He remained on the Pacific coast for two years and a half.

He has invented a life preserver that is claimed to be superior to any other in existence. It is a gum jacket that can be inflated at will, and is sufficiently strong to float the weight of two ordinary persons. His friends, and many who have examined this preserver, are enthusiastic in its praises, and claim the day is not far distant when it will be in universal use.

6. INDIANA3 SISLEY (LEWIS2, JACOB1) was born May 18, 1809 in Washington Twp., Fayette Co., PA, and died December 25, 1888 in Whitley Co., IN. She married CONRAD STEM Bef. 1833, son of JOSEPH STEM and MARY.

More About INDIANA SISLEY:

Burial: Hively Corners Cemetery, Thorncreek Twp., Whitley Co., IN

Record Change: August 28, 1999

Notes for CONRAD STEM:

[MyNotes: Conrad Stem was first located in the 1840 census of Washington township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania. But there is a Joseph Stem listed earlier in 1820 Westmoreland county and in 1830 Fayette county. It is possible that this Joseph Stem is Conrad’s father. Conrad and Indiana Stem were living in Fayette county in 1839 when they received their share of her father’s estate.

By 1850 both Conrad and Joseph Stem had relocated to Chester township, Wayne county, Ohio and were neighbors of the Peter Wise family. Malissa Stem, daughter of Conrad and Indiana, married Jacob Wise in 1850 in Wayne county, Ohio. Prior to 1860, Conrad and Indiana moved their family to Thorncreek township, Whitley county, Indiana. Jacob Wise and Malissa settled in Whitley county about 1852.

[MyNote: The surname STEM has also been recorded as Stemm, Stam, Stern and Stein. Records for all these spellings have been found in early Pennsylvania, during the Revolution and before.]

FAMILY REUNION: Undated Article page 17 column 4 in "the scrapbook" [1904]

A reunion of the descendants of the Conrad Stem family was held July 4th at the home of Mrs. Eli Anspaugh at Shriner Lake. The Stems were among the first settlers of this section and only two members of this family, Esther Anspaugh and Austin

Stem of Elkhart, are living. This was the second reunion of the relatives and friends which have been held annually at the home of one of the members.

The following relatives and friends were present: Messrs and Mesdames William Wise, Sanford Tinkham and family, Frank Martin and family, Martin Winebrenner and Wm. Ravely of Albion; Noah, John and George Pritchard, Ben Hively, David Anspaugh

of Churubusco; C.R. Brubaker and family, Mrs. Ella Miller, Mrs. Burns, Mrs. Wm. Brubaker, Mrs. George Ditsch of Wawaka; Miner Hazlette Wise, Erma Tinkham, Minnie Dumbauld of Markle; Golda Hyre. Messrs Rolly Slover, Andrew Vanderford, Henry

Washam and Henry Brown of Pierceton; Mauriel Wise, Harlo Burns and others.

After relieving a well filled table of its burden and sitting for a photo all departed for their respective homes to meet in reunion again July 4th, 1905.

Generation No. 4

9. WILSON4 MCCRORY (HESTER3 SISLEY, LEWIS2, JACOB1) was born November 02, 1812 in Fayette Co., PA65, and died Bef. 1900 in <Fayette Co., PA>66. He married MARY HAMER November 02, 1870.

Notes for WILSON MCCRORY:

Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County, Pennsylvania Gresham, 1889

p.362 Wilson McCrory, of Washington township, is a son of James and Hester (Sisley) McCrory, and was born at Cookstown, now Fayette City, November 2, 1812. He is of English descent. His father, James McCrory, was a native of Fayette county, and a son of James McCrory, who came from England and settled near Allenport, Washington county, over one hundred years ago. His mother, Hester Sisley, was a daughter of Lewis Sisley, who settled in the county over one hundred years ago.

Wilson McCrory attended several subscription schools, later learned the blacksmith trade under his father, who was an early settler of "Cookstown" and cut the logs on the ground where he erected his house and shop. He followed blacksmithing for four years, and then engaged in steamboating, which he continued up to 1885.

He was married November 2, 1870, to Mary, daughter of James Hamer, the latter a native of Manchester, England, who came to Brownsville in 1822, and removed thence to "Cookstown". They have two children: James H. and Nelson. The older son is mechanically inclined, and without any assistance when thirteen years of age built a steam engine. His third and last engine is one of four horse-power. With it he has drilled a well thirty-six feet deep, and found a small flow of gas.

Mr. McCrory has in his possession as relics the Sisley conch shell, bearing date of 1806, and the old indentures - over a century in age - by which his father was bound to work three years for about two pounds sterling, three months schooling and a "freedom suit".

He served as tax collector, was elected school director and has filled several other offices of the borough. Mr. McCrory was at the siege of Vicksburg, in the Morgan raid from Kentucky to Ohio, and was at Buffington Island. After a long life of activity and hard labor, he has now retired from business, and is a highly respected citizen of Fayette City, where he at present resides.

He was reared on a farm, learned the trade of blacksmith, and then left both farm and shop to learn engineering on a steamboat. He served as engineer of boats on nearly all the western rivers, and in 1862 at Louisville, Ky., volunteered to serve as an engineer in the United States naval service. He served under Grant at Forts Henry and Donnelson, and at Vicksburg, and after the close of the Civil war he remained on the western waters until 1867, when he came to his present farm which he has cultivated and managed ever since.

His farm contains one hundred and forty-six acres of good farming land, and thirty-five acres of it is underlaid with a vein of superior coking coal. He also owns two hundred and forty acres of choice land near Aurora, Hamilton county, Nebraska. Mr. McCrory has always been energetic and successful. He is a Democrat and has voted that ticket for fifty-four years. He has been a member of the Church of Christ for a number of years, and always takes an interest in anything calculated to improve his community.

She was again married March 30, 1876 to Jacob Scott, with whom she lived until his death, June 2, 1890, after which she resided with her son until she was called to rest.

The most of her life was passed in the vicinity where she died, where all learned to esteem her for her kind and careful life and many virtues. William P. Wise, past 83 years old, well-known Whitley county farmer, died Saturday night at 8:45 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harlo Burns, in Troy Township. Wise was a farmer by occupation all his life and was regarded as an upright and honest Christian character and a fair dealer with all his neighbors, each of whom characterized Mr. Wise as one of the finest neighbors a person could have and one who never spoke anything but kind words of everyone with whom he was acquainted.

The body was brought to the DeMoney Funeral Home in Columbia City and was removed from there to the Harlo Burns home Sunday. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Burns home. Dr. E.C. Lindsay, of Goshen, will conduct the services and burial will be in Scott cemetery.

DEATH NOTICE: Undated article from "the scrapbook" [estimated abt 1890]

Two weeks ago D.A. Davis received a telegram announcing that his partner, James R. Wise was seriously ill of small pox at Chihuahua, Mexico. Mr. Davis at once came to Las Cruces to make arrangements for sending down a nurse, and to have everything possible done for Mr. Wise, till he himself, should be able to go down to take care of him. On Tuesday last, Mr. Davis was on the point of starting for his friend’s bedside when he received a telegram announcing Mr. Wise’s death. Hurrying on down he found that in compliance with his instructions every possible care and attention had been given his friend, but that the dread disease had proved too much for the best medical skill and careful nursing and Mr. Wise had succumbed. He accordingly bought a pretty lot in the cemetery in perpetuity, had it carefully fenced in, and there laid his friend’s body to rest. Mr. Wise and Mr. Davis had been intimate friends and associated together in business for years. Mr. Davis’ many friends throughout southern New Mexico feel deeply with him in the loss of his old friend and partner.

OBITUARY: Undated article on page 15 column 4 in "The Scrapbook"

Mrs. Miriam Minerva Blain-Wise was born in Whitley county, Indiana, September 26th, 1853. Died, March 8th, 1892. Age 36 years, 5 months and 12 days. She became a member of the Columbia City Baptist church in November 1887. Mrs. Wise left two children, Earl and Ethel, aged respectively 12 and 9 years. She was a widow for more than two years prior to her death. She was a quiet, patient, faithful Christian, and passed away fully confident that all was well beyond. She bore life’s burdens without complaint, carefully concealed her troubles and with a heroism akin to greatness, toiled on. Her ambition was to properly raise and educate her children, but her summons came before the task was done. With sympathy for the orphans and friends, and respect for the memory of the deceased, we leave all with Him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will. After brief services at the house, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Sanders, who was too ill to go to the place of burial, the remains were taken to the family burial grounds near Etna where Rev. Rockey preached a sermon, "One by one." D.W. Sanders

FUNERAL: Undated article from "the scrapbook"

The funeral of Mrs. Wise took place last Thursday and the remains were taken to the Scott Cemetery in Troy township for interment. Considering the condition of the roads and the driving cold wind the trip was a terrible one. When three miles north of town the horses on the hearse gave out and a team was borrowed from Mr. Egner to complete the journey. Rev. Rockey, owing to the indisposition on the part of Rev. Sanders, led the procession and he says it was the worst trip he ever made in his life. The distance was about eight miles, and the horses were obliged to travel it at a very slow and plodding gait.

BIOGRAPHY: History of Whitley County, Indiana Kaler, 1907

William R. Hively, a young, prosperous farmer, living in Thorncreek township, was born in this township July 5, 1866, is the son of Samuel and Belle (Engle) Hively, the former a native of Whitley county. They experienced many of the privations of those in the early history of the county, but they were ever cheerful and enjoyed the regard and friendship of a large acquaintance. They were devoted and consistent members of the Christian church, and zealous in its service. The husband passed away in 1892, but the widow still resides on the old homestead.

William R. has lived all his life in Thorncreek township, remaining at home till of age, performing the duties of an affectionate son and being educated in the common schools. He worked by the month for four years, carefully husbanding his means, when he bought a small farm, which he sold later, and then in 1901 purchased his present farm of ninety-one aces, in the improvement of which he has spent much time and money. It is tile drained, well fenced and systematically managed and renders profitable results. It has an eight-room house, substantial barn and other convenient buildings, and the entire farm presents a thrifty and prosperous appearance. This farm was the homestead of Jacob Fisher, whose son, Adam Fisher, erected the house and his home till retiring to Columbia City.

March 29, 1891, Mr. Hively was married to Elsie D., daughter of Adam and Mary (Stem) Fisher, the latter now deceased, while the former is still living in Columbia City. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hively, namely: Walter, Clarence, Irvin, Grace, Voyd and Alta.

Both are members of the Christian church, contributing liberally toward its support, and are highly respected and esteemed by many personal and social friends. In politics he is a Democrat, and enjoys social and fraternal relations with the Order of Ben Hur at Columbia City. Mrs. Hively was born on the present farm September 21, 1868, and her childhood and active life passed on the farm.
