SOLLOWAY, HOLDERS & SKILLERN with CHALLONER

Not withstanding careful examination of Registers, am not certain that Richard Solloway (2) is son of Richard (1). Other Solloways appear in Marthon Registers. Richard (2) was buried at Marthon 1777 and left some property, his will being proved at Worcester. He was buried in the family vault at Marthon. Robert Solloway (3) was a merchant in Gloucester where he was buried in 1796. Of John (3) who married Elizabeth Butler and had 5 sons and two daughters. Of these the first four were found to be born before wedlock & of all the children only one seems to have married and she had one issue & was Jane who married Capt. Gascoigne as here before stated. From all I can gather the story of the Solloways would be a very very sad story indeed. So far as I can gather only one seems to have a really happy life & that one was your grandmother. In provident - probably proud of certain social connections and attempting to live up to a style beyond their means, they brought ruin to themselves and their wives and daughters -- Sic trauni gloria mundi --Vanitas vanitatis omnia Vanitas -- (4) Rev’d Rich. Skillern was master of the Crypt School & Vicar of Chipping Norton, he died in 1846. (5) Susan is dear Mrs Banks now living at Ealing.. She is aunt to Charles Crawford. Notice how the Skillerns & Banks & Challoners intermarried. (I am afraid the perpetuation of the patronymic Buitler does not refer back to one of whom we could be proud).
